1) your max unit size in game-options. 2) your reinforcement wave count in game-options. 3) the size of the battle at all (both factions in the battle 800 vs 700 = 1500) if you know all this, you know when the battle "reset" and can make a auto-battle after the first battle. i never have a reset, only for the units that flee after the battle
